Environmental Scan of Educational Technology

The environmental scan of educational technology in U.S. public schools serves as a vital tool for understanding the relationship between technology and education within the public school system. Its  goal is to furnish readers with an accurate depiction of the current state of affairs regarding technology, offering insights into trends, challenges, and opportunities that are influencing the realm of technology in teaching and learning.

I am currently not teaching in any school district. I relied on information from the website datausa.io and the CCISD school website. I was able to find information on the demographics of my city on the datausa.io website. The school district website had a technology plan that I was able to gain information from.

Demographic Insights:

Corpus Christi, Texas, stands as a vibrant city by the sea with a unique demographic profile. As of 2020, the median household income in Corpus Christi reached $57,387, demonstrating a modest increase from the previous year.

The city is home to a  population of approximately 326,000 residents, with a significant majority, 94.4%, being citizens. Interestingly, 9.07% of Corpus Christi's residents were born outside of the United States, adding to the city's rich cultural tapestry.

In 2020, the ethnic composition of Corpus Christi revealed a noteworthy statistic: White (Hispanic) residents constituted 1.84 times more of the population (173,000 people) than any other race or ethnicity.

Economic Landscape:

Corpus Christi's economic vitality is driven by various industries, with Health Care & Social Assistance, Retail Trade, and Construction leading the way. Mining, Quarrying, & Oil & Gas Extraction, Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing & Hunting, & Mining, and Utilities emerge as the highest paying industries, highlighting the city's diverse economic base.

Educational Technology in Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD)The Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD) is very connected. I was surprised to find  a robust technological system. CCISD encompasses 56 campuses, 36 Elementary schools, 10 Middle schools, 8 High schools, and 2 special campuses.

The student enrollment in CCISD stands at  33,414, categorizing it within the range of districts with a student population between 25,000 and 49,999.

The information gathered from the website states that All 56 campuses have a direct connection to the internet, ensuring that every educational institution within the district is equipped with this crucial resource. Furthermore, an astounding 27,000 classrooms enjoy direct internet connectivity, underscoring the commitment to technology-enhanced education.

Perhaps one of the most noteworthy aspects of CCISD's technological integration is its remarkable 1:1 computer-to-student ratio and an equally impressive 1:1 computer-to-teacher ratio. This parity in technology distribution reflects the district's dedication to providing equitable access to digital resources and fostering an environment conducive to modern learning practices.

In conclusion, the environmental scan of educational technology in U.S. public schools, as exemplified by the case of Corpus Christi, Texas, is an ongoing and dynamic process. It not only highlights the local demographic and economic landscape but also underscores the significance of technology integration within the educational sphere. Such initiatives are crucial in fostering equitable access to educational resources and ensuring that students and teachers alike are well-equipped for the challenges and opportunities presented by the ever-evolving digital age.

  1. Hello Najat! I agree that the most important thing is making the connection between technology and education. Nowadays technology is a major part of our lives and not being able to utilize it in education would be a shame. My school district also meets the 1:1 student to computer ratio, and I must say that it is amazing. It provides equitable access for all students as well as employees. I believe more districts should implement this into their technology plan as it helps play a role in one’s learning. After all as you said it is an evolving digital age which implements technology to be around for many years to come so why not implement it in education to help drive the learning towards success.
